James Everett Garner

Mr. James Everett Garner, 79, of Hixson, TN passed away Wednesday, November 6, 2019. He was the son of the late James Everett and Johnnie Partain Garner, born on December 10, 1939 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. On February 5, 1961, he united in marriage with Madeleine Livingston, of Prentiss, Mississippi, whom he met in school at the University of Mississippi. He earned his undergraduate degree with a double major in mathematics and physics at the University of Mississippi, and his master’s degree there in mathematics.

James began his career teaching in Jacksonville, Florida, then moved on to teach college at Lambuth University in Jackson, Tennessee. He taught at Greensboro College in Greensboro, North Carolina, for several years before leading their Admissions team as Director of Admissions. He then served as Director of Admission at Union College in Barbourville, KY. In the early 1980’s he moved on to teach where he eventually retired almost a decade ago at Chattanooga State Technical and Community College. He also ran his own online business. He has been an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga for 36 years. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family, entertaining them in fun, creative ways while teaching and inspiring them along the way. He was good and attentive to every person he met.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, JoAnna Williams, and three nephews. Survivors include his loving wife Madeleine of Chattanooga, three daughters- Pam Smith and husband Jesse of Heidrick, KY; Jill Hess and husband Gary of Cumming, GA; Julie Ruppieko and husband Ian of Smyrna, GA; his son William Garner; grandchildren: Katie Smith, Watson Hess, Haley Hess, Mary Smith and T.J. Hess; and five nieces.

His funeral service will be conducted in the chapel of First Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga, Saturday November 9, 2019 at 12:00 noon with a visitation at 11:00 am, Pastor Chris Ehlers officiating. He will be laid to rest in Hamilton Memorial Gardens in Hixson, TN. Pallbearers will be Jesse Smith, Gary Hess and Ian Ruppieko.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to one of the following ministries of First Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga: The Men’s Prison Ministry, The Flower Ministry or The World Missions Ministry.
