Harold Doug Powell

May 16, 1932 ~ September 17, 2017 (age 85) 85 Years Old
Harold Dugger Powell, 85, of Signal Mountain, Tennessee, died on September 17, 2017.
Born in Meigs County, Tennessee, on May 16, 1932, Dugg Powell loved his God, family, and country. He moved to Sweetwater, Tennessee, in elementary school and attended Tennessee Military Institute in high school. He graduated from the University of Tennessee where he participated in ROTC and loved the Vols. Dugg then became a US Airforce officer posted in Germany at a fail safe base. When a girl from home, Eleanor Willingham, was touring Europe, they met in Paris, rekindling an old friendship, falling in love on the banks of the Seine, and leading to a wonderful 51 year marriage.
After leaving the service, Dugg and Eleanor returned to Signal Mountain, where he began a career as an insurance agent and financial advisor and raised his family. Later in life, he enjoyed farming the family farm in Sweetwater.
Dugg is preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Lee Willingham Powell, his parents, Frank and Mary Glades Powell, and his brother, Richard Franklin Powell.
Dugg is survived and loved dearly by his five children, Harold Dugger “Happy” (Laurie) Powell Jr., Frank Preston (Lori) Powell, William Crosby “Bill” (Sissy) Powell, Mary Lee Powell (Wade) McGregor of Nashville, and the caboose, Anne Gillespie Powell “Anne G.” (Paul) Lang. In addition, he is survived by fourteen grandchildren: Mary Ann Powell Sokolowski, Trey Powell, Eleanor Powell Hildebrand, Melissa Powell Street, Meredith Powell Clark, Mary Sessions Powell Bridges, Meg McGregor, Malone Powell Wittler, Kate McGregor, Laura Powell, Jack McGregor, Emily Powell, Bryan Lang and Laurel Anne Lang, and seven great-grandchildren, a brother, James Preston Powell of Americus, Georgia, and two sisters, Rebecca (Coy) Franklin of Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Mary Beth Rogers of Americus, Georgia.
Dugg’s greatest love of all was for his Lord Jesus Christ for whom he served faithfully with all his heart.
Some of the ways he loved serving the Lord were serving as trustee of the Little Brown Church, deacon and long time Sunday school teacher at First Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga, co-founder and board member of the Chattanooga Chapter of Campus Crusade for Christ/CRU, and volunteer at Chattanooga Bible Institute/Richmont University. Some of the grandchildren’s fondest memories were of the times that Dugg and Eleanor took all their grandchildren to family camp at Camp Vesper Point for a week each summer. He was, most importantly, a wonderful Christian husband, father and Granddaddy.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 21, from 10-12 at First Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga in the connector, followed by the service at noon, with Chris Bowen and Darryl Smith presiding. A private burial will follow in Riceville, Tennessee.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a ministry that was near to Dugg’s heart, CRU for the benefit of Darryl Smith, mailed to 13302 Moss Park Ridge Drive, Orlando, FL 32832.
