George R. Madewell

George R. Madewell, longtime resident of Red Bank and Soddy Daisy, passed away from earth into the loving arms of his Lord on Feb. 11. He was 96 years young.
Mr. Madewell was preceded in death by his loving wife and soulmate of 62 years, Mildred Louise Payne of Soddy Daisy. He is survived by two children, Terry L. Madewell (Jacki) of Ridgeway, S.C. and Shirley J. Madewell of Red Bank, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
He proudly served his country in WWII in the Navy, first on the aircraft carrier the USS WASP (CV-7) that was torpedoed and sunk in the Coral Sea. He then continued his service on the USS Enterprise. His units on both ships received Presidential Citations for outstanding service during wartime. He was called into service again during the Korean War and received an Honorable Discharge from the Navy.
He attended reunions of his sunken carrier the WASP for many years when he could, including one held in Chattanooga in Sept. 2016
For many years he was very active in the Soddy Daisy Lions Club and was named Lion of the Year twice and was honored as a “Melvin Jones Fellow.”
He received several patents for his work at Combustion Engineering and played an important role in the Sequoia Nuclear Facility. After retirement from Combustion, he worked part and full time at S&H Erectors in Hixson. He retired from work, one of his many life passions, when he was 85 years old.
He was a longtime member of Red Bank Presbyterian Church. He loved and was loved by his family, friends, church, community and was devoted to his Lord and Savior.
The family expresses deep and loving gratitude to everyone at Soddy Daisy Health Care, and specifically to Ms. Denise Hadley. The family expresses their gratitude to Hospice of Chattanooga.
The family donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the Red Bank Presbyterian Church, 4320 Dayton Blvd. Chattanooga, Tenn. 37415.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Lane Funeral Home with Rev. Eric Duble officiating. Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Military Honors being observed.
The family will receive friends on Monday, February 13, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday from 12:00 noon until the funeral hour at the funeral home.
